WINES OF THE MONTH

WE ARE INTRODUCING THREE GREAT WINES FROM THE ‘LAND OF WINE’
AND THE POINTED TIP OF THE ITALIAN BOOT FACING SICILIY ACROSS THE STRAIT OF MESSINA.

These wines from the heart of “Enotria Tellus,” the ancient name for Calabria, meaning the land of wine, are made by wine producer Statti with indigenous grapes and a lot of care and experience.
The Statti Wine Family is dedicated to growing indigenous varietals from Calabria, combining modern-day innovation and a great tradition dating back to the 18th century.
Convinced a great wine always starts in the vineyards, the winemakers take good care of the plants on the hillsides that the Statti family has lived on since the 18th century. The now 100 hectares of vineyards, alongside slopes and hills protecting the mostly indigenous grape varietals from the harsh maritime winds, are cultivated with great dedication and devotion to create some of Calabria’s best wines.

Statti Greco Calabria IGT (Indicatione Geografica Tipica)

The name Greco (the Greek) for this flavorful Italian white wine varietal predominantly at home in the Italian south came over with early settlers from Greece who made parts from Sicily to Apulia and Campania their home, bringing their goods and traditions. This is a long time ago, but some things just stick. In the case of the Greco grapes, it resulted in a beautiful golden yellow wine with brilliant highlights and delicious aromas of yellow fruit, white flowers, spice notes, and a solid herbal midpalate. This is a soft and fruit-forward yet mineral white wine with tangy fruit at the core and a long, flavorful finish ending in roasted and even salted almonds and toast flavors. Good with soft cheeses, flavorful fish dishes, or just as a memorable aperitif.

Statti Gaglioppo Calabria IGT 2022

Gaglioppo is one of those indigenous grapes from Calabria that is not well known elsewhere; if treated right, it can produce exciting red wines that are beautiful and shiny in their red color, elegant in personality, yet intense and engaging in flavor. The predominant aromas of ripe dark cherries and spices with the more delicate scents of white flowers, violet, and honeycomb are an intriguing mix of light and bright red wines and, on the other side, very powerful ones. The mouthfeel is bright but complex with pomegranate, cranberries, and ripe plum. Like Pinot Noir, this red wine is also a good food wine and can be matched with rich seafood dishes or grilled meats.

Statti ‘Cauro’ Calabria IGT 2019

This is a modern wine creation from a very traditional wine region with the best of both worlds in it. The Cauro is an intense, fullflavored red with an elegant complexity and good body weight. The delicious aromas of dried fruit and flowers, spices like clove and fresh black pepper, tobacco, and mocha notes all end up in a smooth, polished, long, lingering finish. This red blend made from 50% of the international grape varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% of the calabrese Gaglioppo grape, and 20% of Magliocco, another indigenous grape from Calabria, pairs very well with meats, grilled or with mushroom sauce, complex stew dishes from Beef or Lamb, or with hard cheeses.
